Pico Interactive took to the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco this week with a massive booth, hyping the event as a “treat” that would be a ‘Journey to Infinity’. Well, there’s nothing in particular to announce.

Pico, the creator of the Pico 4 standalone, is arguably one of the biggest untapped threats to Meta’s market supremacy in the consumer VR standalone segment. At least for now.
Owned by TikTok parent company ByteDance, many speculated that the China-based Pico was finally ready to announce the consumer launch of Pico 4 in the United States, a step that many (including us) have been waiting for following a US hiring spree last summer.
At the time, a Protocol report maintained would usher in “a major focus on content licensing as well as marketing its hardware to U.S. consumers.”

So, is Pico 4 coming to US consumers? We spoke to the company at GDC this week, and despite a flashy ‘save the date’ countdown to its ‘Journey to Infinity’ and a massive booth on the show floor, there’s simply nothing to report.

To boot, Pico’s Twitter presence isn’t very large—it has less than 10,000 followers at the time of this writing—but the initial countdown tweet promising to kick off “a new journey” managed to take the record for the company’s most-viewed tweet at more than 67,000 impressions. People were expecting something big from Pico at GDC, and it simply didn’t manifest.

Launched in October 2022, Pico is probably the only company right now with both a capable device and the market stability to directly compete with Meta, the undisputed champion of the consumer standalone segment with Quest 2. Under the wing of the Chinese ByteDance media empire, Pico not only has the sort of cash reserves to subsidize hardware, but also a growing ability to attract developer interest.
Priced at €420 (~$455), Pico 4 is available across Europe, China and a number of APAC countries, including Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. The missing puzzle piece is undoubtedly a North American release.
But, if you’re still waiting to hear about the much-anticipated US rollout, you should adjust your expectations for this week, because the only thing going on at the Pico booth are demos for the headset.

Pico’s Big Announcement at GDC? Nothing in Particular

Norway’s central unit for fighting economic crimes has seized some of the crypto assets that hackers stole from the Ronin Network, an Ethereum (ETH)-linked sidechain made for the blockchain game Axie Infinity (AXS).
In March, attackers believed to be from the North Korean cybercriminal organization Lazarus group hacked the private keys of the Ronin bridge and stole 173,600 Ethereum and 25.5 million USD Coin (USDC) worth over $600 million.

In a statement, the Økokrim (Norwegian National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime) says it seized $5.84 million of the stolen assets during the course of its investigation with crypto tracing specialists from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The Økokrim says it is the largest amount of cryptocurrency that the Norwegian police have seized to date.
“Økokrim has over time been working to trace the proceeds from the theft. Økokrim and its international partners have monitored the money laundering process around the clock.
This has made it possible for Økokrim to trace a lot of the money and hamper the laundering process for the hackers.”
The Økokrim says it will work with Sky Mavis, the company behind Axie Infinity, to ensure that the recovered funds will be returned to the victims.
The agency also says it will continue to track the hackers’ money laundering operation to prevent the stolen cryptocurrency from being converted into fiat money, which could be used to fund North Korea’s nuclear program.

Norwegian Authorities Seize Nearly $6,000,000 in Crypto Stolen in 2022 Hack on Axie Infinity (AXS) Ronin Network

The Norwegian police seized nearly 60 million krone ($5.9 million) in cryptocurrencies. 
The assets were previously stolen by the notorious North Korean hacking collective – the Lazarus Group – which breached the security of the blockchain-based game Axie Infinity.
The Record Seizure
Norway’s National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime (Økokrim) confiscated almost $6 million worth of digital currencies, a record-high crypto seizure in the Scandinavian country.
The agency noted that the funds are part of the massive exploit on Sky Mavis (a technology company that develops the popular blockchain-based game Axie Infinity) carried out by North Korean hackers.
Økokrim joined forces with international law enforcement partners, including the FBI, to track the stolen proceeds and prevent the wrongdoers from money laundering. 
“We work with FBI specialists on tracking cryptocurrency. Such cooperation between countries means that we as a society stand stronger in the fight against digital, profit-motivated crime,” said First State Attorney Marianne Bender.

She further claimed that the hackers’ main goal was to support the totalitarian regime in North Korea and fuel its nuclear weapon programs. 
“It has therefore been important to track the cryptocurrency and try to stop the money when they try to withdraw it in physical values,” she added.
Bender praised the efforts of Økokrim, saying this case “shows that we also have a great capacity to follow the money on the blockchain, even if the criminals use advanced methods.”
The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) warned last year that North Korea’s infamous hacking group – the Lazarus – is formed by “a masterful army of cybercriminals and foreign affiliates.” It also uses “sophisticated” techniques to drain assets from blockchain organizations. 
North Korea: a Global Leader on the Crypto Crime Scene
One of the biggest hacks in crypto’s history happened last spring when criminals stole more than $588 million worth of ETH and $25.5 million in USDC from Ronin Bridge (an Ethereum sidechain built for Axie Infinity). After conducting an investigation, the FBI determined that the Lazarus group stood behind the crime.  
The blockchain analytics company – Elliptic Enterprises – revealed several months later that the hacking collective was responsible for another attack: the $100 million exploit on Harmony’s Horizon Bridge.
Chainalysis also explored the matter, estimating that North Korean hackers stole the record $1.7 billion worth of cryptocurrencies in 2022, siphoning 65% of those funds from DeFi protocols.

Norwegian police recover $5.9M stolen from Axie Infinity Ronin hack

A crypto gaming altcoin is following Axie Infinity (AXS) on a parabolic surge of its own, more than doubling in value this month.
Ronin (RON), the Ethereum (ETH)-linked sidechain designed specifically for the Axie Infinity ecosystem, soared in price this month from $0.26 at the start of the year to $0.74, a more than 184% increase.

RON, the 258th-ranked crypto asset by market cap, continues trading at $0.74 at time of writing. Ronin’s surge came as the Axie Infinity also soared ahead of Monday’s $60 million token unlock event.
AXS surged from a low of $6.11 at the start of the year to a high of $13.92 this past weekend. It has since dipped down at time of writing to $11.87.
The AXS rally was unusual since prices of tokens frequently dip ahead of their token unlocks, which allows investors a chance to sell their tokens after vesting periods expire.
Axie Infinity’s next token-unlocking event will occur on April 17th. The unlock will represent 1.45% of the asset’s total supply worth nearly $45.9 million at time of writing, according to TokenUnlocks.
In a 2020 whitepaper, Trung Nguyen, co-founder and CEO of Axie Infinity creator Sky Mavis, says,
“Ronin will continuously evolve over the years to serve the spirit and ethos of blockchain gaming. On the technical side, we are also looking into various solutions to further strengthen and scale Ronin.”

Crypto Gaming Altcoin Follows Axie Infinity (AXS) With Parabolic Surge, Rallies 184% This Month

Axie Infinity has been almost chocked to extinction by 2022’s bear market. During that same year, interest in NFTs declined, hitting Axie Infinity hard. 
According to CoinGecko, the token has been experiencing growth in almost all time frames with the biggest being the bi-weekly time frame with an impressive 48% gain. 
But recently, the game has been facing some problems. According to activeplayer.io, Axie Infinity has been having trouble retaining players, with the game reverting back to November 2020 levels. However, recent developments might have contributed to AXS’ rise once again. 


On-Chain Developments Drive Axie Forward
On December 28th, the devs released Axie Infinity: Homeland, the game’s flagship land-based experience. This release is only playable by landowners which is a core part of the game. The alpha release would be used by the developers to gather feedback and explore new features.

Being an alpha release, it is part of a bigger development timeline as detailed in another tweet. The current release has the basic features like idle battles, trading, and a leaderboard. 
The ecosystem will also release $63 million worth of AXS next Monday. It is to be seen how the market could react with Homeland’s release and the unlocking of such a huge amount of tokens in the long-term.

At $11.90, What’s In Store For AXS? 
At its current price, AXS bulls are trying to consolidate above the token’s $11.95 support which, if successful, would enable AXS to have enough momentum to break through the $12.30 resistance. 
But with the release of a large amount of AXS tokens next week, we might see the token break through above $12.30 and consolidate there. 

This release of tokens, however, could spark a sell-off which might bring the price of AXS to revert to $11.10 support. Homeland’s clear development timeline could give investors confidence on where the game is heading. 
The dip in price that will occur as more tokens are available could also be an opportunity for investors and traders to get in on AXS at a discount.



The token’s price movement in the coming days will be marked with short to medium term volatility with a slight possibility of a sell-off once the tokens are released. 
However, on-chain developments should be able to weather the slightly bearish outlook in the short to medium term. 
Investors and traders should then monitor how the token may react as unlocked tokens hit the market. AXS bulls could also watch Bitcoin’s price movement as it could also have an effect on the token’s future price movement.

Axie Infinity Tallies 48% Rally – Are Gamers Flocking Back To The Digital Pet Community?

An Ethereum (ETH)-based gaming altcoin surged this weekend ahead of a large token unlocking event, defying conventional trading wisdom.
Axie Infinity (AXS) rallied from trading around $9.20 on Saturday to a high of $13.84 on Sunday, a more than 50% increase.

AXS, the 41st-ranked crypto asset by market cap, has since partially retraced and is trading at $12.18 at time of writing.
The price jump happened in advance of a roughly 4.8 million AXS token unlocking event that happened on Monday, according to the tokenomics data website TokenUnlocks. The unlocking event represented 1.812% of the asset’s total supply and was worth more than $60 million at current prices.
The recent price action of AXS flies in the face of conventional wisdom about token unlocks, which give investors opportunities to sell digital assets after vesting periods expire. Traditionally, token unlocks are viewed as bearish catalysts.
Axie Infinity’s next token-unlocking event will occur on April 17th. The unlock will represent 1.45% of the asset’s total supply (worth nearly $50 million at time of writing), according to TokenUnlocks.
AXS is up more than 100% since the start of 2023 when it was trading around $6.00. Despite its price surge this month, the token still remains over 92% down from its all-time high of $164.90, which it hit in November 2021.

Ethereum-Based Gaming Altcoin Suddenly Erupts Ahead of $60,000,000 Token Unlock

The GameFi industry has been hit hard during the 2022 crypto winter which wiped billions off the crypto market. Axie Infinity is one of the projects that were pummeled to the ground. According to a July 2022 report by CheersLand, the native token of Axie Infinity, AXS, has lost 91% of its value in the third quarter of last year. 
But with the reinvigorated crypto sentiment in the market, AXS has seen growth since the start of the year. According to CoinGecko, the token is up 43% in the past 24 hours with the biggest gain being made in the bi-weekly time frame. 
Despite negative developments on-chain, this rise in price might be a sign of revival for Axie Infinity. 

Player Count Continues Downward Spiral 
A game needs active players to sustain itself for a long time and Axie Infinity has been struggling to retain its player base. According to activeplayer.io, the game has been seeing a continuous decline in its fan base. 
Since hitting an all-time-high back in January of 2022, the fear, uncertainty, and doubt surrounding the crypto market has clawed through the number of players. The biggest drop in the player base, however, was back in June 2022 when the game lost 1.2 million players in the span of a month. 

Right now, the game is near its November 2020 lows which is a pretty bad look for one of the biggest play-to-earn games in the market. 
AXS Price Climbing – Can it Sustain This Momentum? 
Player base-wise, Axie’s situation is not looking great. However, Axie Infinity’s NFTs are still some of the most traded NFTs in the open market, surpassing big names like Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunks.

This had a profound effect on AXS as the token broke through its $12.23 resistance, gaining ground on its September 2022 level. As of writing, January 23rd, AXS bulls are targeting the $13.20 resistance.
For this to happen, the token must close today above $13.20 and consolidate at this level. However, if the token faces rejection at this level, investors and traders can rely on $12.23 for support in the next few weeks. 



But with the broader crypto market continuing to rally, AXS could ride the bullish wave to possibly target the $15 resistance in the next few months. This improving metric might also pull returning players or new players towards the game, further adding on to the bullishness. 
For now, investors and traders can confidently hold AXS in the short to medium term as gains are still to be made.

AXS price has formed a "gravestone" doji on its daily chart that coupled with its recent token unlock event hint at a potential bearish reversal ahead. 

3 signs Axie Infinity price risks giving up its 135% gains in January 

After tapping a few consecutive multi-month highs above $23,000, bitcoin has retraced slightly and has slipped below that line.
Dogecoin and Ripple are the best performers from the top 10 altcoins, while Axie Infinity has stolen the show from the mid-caps.
BTC Sits Beneath $23K
It was on January 9 when the primary cryptocurrency finally managed to decisively overcome $17,000 after weeks of unsuccessful attempts. Since then, the asset has never looked back and has added thousands of dollars.
The first week after that breakout saw the most substantial price increase in a while, as BTC skyrocketed to over $21,000 by the end of it. The beginning of the next one was rather calm, and it wasn’t until last Friday that the cryptocurrency initiated another leg up that resulted in breaking above $22,000 and even $23,000.
As such, bitcoin managed to chart its highest price tag since early September during the weekend at over $23,200. It has retraced by a few hundred dollars since then and trades just under $23,000 as of now, though.
Its market capitalization has slipped beneath $440 billion, and its market cap stands firm at 42% amid ongoing speculation on whether this price run is actually a bull trap.

AXS Skyrockets 42%
Axie Infinity is today’s top performer, as its native cryptocurrency has soared by more than 40% on a daily scale. This means that AXS has tapped $13 for the first time in a while.
NEAR Protocol and Ethereum Classic are next in line from the mid-cap alts. The former is up by 9%, while the latter has pumped by 5% to $23.
Ripple and Dogecoin stand out from the larger-cap alts with similar gains of 4%. Consequently, XRP trades at 0.42, while the first-ever memecoin sits close to $0.09.
OKB and SOL have retraced the most from the top 10, by 4.5% and 2.7%, respectively.
Nevertheless, the cumulative market cap of all crypto assets is close to $1.050 trillion.
